How to find good quality clothing pt 2
Dear reader,
Finding clothes that feel right is a bit like treasure hunting. It takes time, a little intuition, and some know-how. So here’s part two of the guide to what I look for when I’m hoping a garment will be a long-term companion.
Start with the feeling
First things first: how does it feel on you? Does it drape softly or hold its shape where it should? You should never have to contort yourself to fit into something. If it doesn’t sit right, it’s the garment’s fault—not yours.
Construction counts
Take a little tour around the seams and edges. Is everything symmetrical? Try buttoning up the piece—blazer, coat, shirt—and see if the buttons line up evenly and the hem sits straight. A garment that pulls or skews to one side might not be made to last.
A word on buttons
Not all buttons are created equal. Give them a gentle tug—do they feel sturdy or like they might jump ship at any moment? Solid buttons (even plastic ones) are a good sign. And if you spot a spare button sewn into the tag or tucked into a pocket—bonus points. That’s usually a quiet little promise that the maker expects your garment to stick around.
Zipper test
If the item has a zipper, check it for branding. I learned from a colleague that YKK is a reliable classic. Open and close it a couple of times. It should glide easily, without catching or needing persuasion. The stitching around it should look clean and secure too.
Inspect the stitches
Seams can reveal a lot. Gently pull at the fabric along the seam—there shouldn’t be any little gaps or skipped stitches. If the threads feel flimsy or unravel with the lightest tug, that’s a red flag. Strong, tidy stitching usually means someone cared during the making process.
Take a peek inside
The inside of the garment is where the real magic hides. Are the pockets neatly sewn? Do the seams look finished or raw? Details like lining, binding, and even French seams (where the raw edges are hidden inside) are all signs of thoughtful construction. A beautiful inside usually hints at a beautiful future.
Quality is often found in the quiet little details. And once you know what to look for, shopping becomes less about guesswork and more about choosing pieces that feel like home from the start.
